Money Tip: Make A Shopping List Before Heading to The Supermarket & Stick To It!
With the cost of just about everything going up, people are looking everywhere they can to try and save a little money. One of the best places you can save money at is your local supermarket, and one of the best ways to do that is to make your list ahead of time and stick to it. This may sound like a simplistic approach, a person might scoff and say things like, "I know how to shop! I don't need a list!"
While that may be true, you might be the world's smartest and most efficient shopper, even you will eventually forget that one key item that you would have remembered if you had a list in your hand. A lot of people, the writer included, use lists so that they know exactly what they need and won't leave anything out. There can be nothing more aggravating then getting home and realizing you forgot the milk, or more importantly the coffee. '
So you go back out again, because there are some things you just need to have. By making a list you can save yourself money because you won't have to burn your gas on repeated trips back to the store (or even more important, you won't fall into the shopping addiction trap so fast). Of course the best written grocery list in the world isn't going to help you save if you just ignore it. Try to make the list and then just get the things on your list. Nothing else. It may not be as easy as you think. A lot of people will be shopping and walk by something that looks good to them, so they throw that extra item into the cart along with the other things. These things can pile up on you.
A list also helps you save money by allowing you to save time. If you know exactly what you want, and you only get the things on your list, you have probably saved yourself at least half an hour of pointless wandering around trying to decide what looks good. Some people like to wander aimlessly around stores, but for most of us time really is money, and time spent standing around in the aisles is basically wasted time and money both.
Before you take off for the store, take a look around the kitchen and see what you still have in there. You can save a lot of money by not buying things you already have. Try to eat a quick snack before you go, hungry people don't always make the best decisions and will have the hardest time sticking to their lists. Try to divide your list into the four food groups, this will save time as well if you shop for items by grouping. Most like items are grouped together by food group anyway. Try to become familiar with the way your grocery store is laid out. It will save a lot of time later on, if you already know where what you want is located.
As always you are only going to save money if you really want to. Make that list and stick to it! It isn't really as complicated as it sounds. Try to leave the spouse and kids at home when shopping if at all possible, nothing gets you off your list faster than the screaming two year old saying "I WANT!" On the other hand, no one is actually responsible for your decisions except you. Remember that these are just helpful hints, none of what you read here needs to be taken as gospel. We like to save money, and thought you might like to save some too.
